Researcher registration

The process of registration is the same for all roles in the Virtual Campus. Each researcher can register on the Virtual Campus with the electronical identity issued to them by the home institution. The first sign-in to the system is actually the registration.

The registration form is pre-filled with data fetched from the Identity Provider (IdP), which can be modified/added if necessary. By selecting the home institution and the role (here Researcher), the ORCID widget appears (Figure 1.).

Connecting researcher profile with ORCID

With that widget, researchers connects their ORCID profile with the one in the Virtual Campus. This is a prerequisite for the researcher to be able to register in the Virtual Campus.

Click on that widget redirects the researcher to the ORCID sign-in page and after successfully signing in to ORCID the researcher is redirected back to the Virtual Campus registration page with a success message (Figure 2).

After submitting the registration, the UNIC admin receives an email notification for confirmation. Each researcher can see publicly available data retrieved from ORCID. By authenticating into the system, these data are displayed under the Personal Information option. Some of these data are Biography, Websites & social links and Keywords (Figure 3). Also, if some data is not correct, it is necessary to change it in the source system, which is ORCID. There is an option here that allows researchers to share their personal data and preferences with other researchers within the UNIC Open Science Campus.

Research interests and matchmaking

There is an option for additional profiling of researchers under the Research and Teaching Interests option (Figure 4.).

The researcher ca select keywords from the following categories: thematic lines, disciplines, fields of research, fields of teaching and modes of cooperation (categories defined by the leaders of the Work package 5). Each researcher can choose as much keywords from each of the categories as they want. For this purpose the following catalogues are used: Thematic Lines, Web of Science keywords, ISCED fields and Modes of Cooperation. These catalogues are read-only and searchable.

Based on those selected keywords, the matchmaking algorithm in the background calculates the total percentage of matching of the researcher with each of the other researchers in the Virtual Campus. This is shown in the option called UNIC mapping (Figure 5.).

Figure 5. Researcher portal – UNIC mapping

Additionally, the matching percentage is calculated for each of the chosen categories. The results of these calculations are presented in a table for each of the categories with a comparison of the chosen keywords and the corresponding percentage of matching (Figure 6.). These results are available by clicking on the details. This algorithm was implemented as an addition to the original plans, in order to help build networks of researchers within the UNIC Open Science Campus.
